With the use and disposal of chemicals getting more and more regulated, this leads the laundry industry to use more ecological cleaning methods. One of these cleaning methods which has gained popularity in particular is wet-cleaning, an environmentally-friendly cleaning process that cleans the most delicate garments without damaging sensitive fibers.
What is Wet-Cleaning and how does it work?
Wet cleaning is a non-toxic, environmentally safe process to clean delicate garments, utilizing computer-controlled equipment, biodegradable soaps and conditioners, and specialized equipment for the many different fabric and fiber types. Therefore, wet cleaning has become an important aspect in modern textile care, including dry-cleaning shops.
Wet Cleaning does not use organic solvents, but rather a small amount of water and special detergents. In contrast to household washing machines, forceful mechanical movement of the linen is avoided – meaning that delicate items can also be cleaned in this way. Shrinkage during the cleaning process is prevented by washing briefly at low temperatures with only slight mechanical movements, and by adding special agents. Fibre-protecting components in the detergent can prevent fibres from swelling and wool from losing its scales.
Wet cleaning is recognized as an eco-friendly way to process delicate garments. Traditional dry cleaning, described as any cleaning process for clothing and textiles using chemical solvents other than water, gets more and more regulated. Therefore, Wetcleaning offers the following advantages compared to traditional dry cleaning methods:
• Environmental issues: traditional dry-cleaning uses solvents and hydrocarbons which are very toxic and a threat to the environment. Furthermore, solvents can leave an unpleasant smell on the linen.
• Linen lifespan: many types of linen enjoy a longer lifespan when processed by using more gentle cleaning methods such as wetcleaning.
• Health risks: fumes are toxic to inhale and can cause burns to the skin of the operating personnel during handling.
• Flexibility: The B&C SP line of softmount washer-extractors can be used for wet-cleaning purposes as well as for traditional laundry purposes.
